How to join the program

The journey through the START program sets off in Germany. It brings together cultural managers from Greece and German sociocultural organizations. As START Fellows and Host Institutions, they jointly develop creative solutions for existing social problems in their communities. If you are interested in taking part in this experience of international cultural exchange and in joining the program, please read the terms of participation below.

The next call for applications for the START program year 2019/20 is scheduled to be launched in early 2019.

Be a Fellow

We welcome applications from aspiring cultural managers resident in Greece who have successfully graduated in their academic or artistic studies and have already gained some initial working experience in the cultural field. Key to your START application is the aspiration and commitment to kick-start and sustain an independent cultural initiative that generates a positive social impact in Greece.

Your profile

Please check that your profile meets the following criteria:

  • Permanently residing in Greece
  • Graduate in arts and/or cultural studies, or in another area with work experience in the cultural field
  • Junior management experience with cultural initiatives through voluntary or professional work
  • Good command of English

Your proposal for a cultural initiative

Please review if your cultural initiative is geared towards:

  • Motivating existing potential in your cultural area
  • Actively involving your local community in the process
  • Connecting with local cultural institutions

How does the application process work?

Stage 1

Submit your written application
  • March 5 until April 5, 2018: Call for applications
  • Review by Jury
  • Feedback on the results
  • Note: There are no fees to apply

Stage 2

Be invited to an interview
  • May 15, 2018: Invitations will be sent out
  • May 29 until June 1, 2018: Interviews in Thessaloniki
  • July 4, 2018: Feedback on the results
  • Note: Travel expenses will be reimbursed up to Euro 100.

Stage 3

Get ready for the program
  • Digital matching process of Fellows and German Host Institutions
  • August 28/29, 2018: Info sessions for the new Fellows in Thessaloniki and Athens
  • Announcement of Placement matching results during the Info sessions 

Important program dates

In case your application is successful, please save the period from:

  • September 22 until November 21, 2018 for Phase I Capacity Building in Germany, including:
  • September 27, 2018: Partnership Day and Opening Event in Berlin
  • October 2 until November 16, 2018: Placement with your Host Institution

Is it possible to apply for either Phase I in Germany or Phase II in Greece?

The START program consists of 3 consecutives phases. The public Call for Applications is for Phase I only: the training and capacity building in Germany. 
Application to Phase II, the implementation phase in Greece, is reserved for the 30 Fellows of Phase I only.
 

Be a Host Institution

We welcome applications from cultural centers and initiatives in Germany eager to offer a 6-week Placement for an up-and-coming cultural manager from Greece. We particularly encourage organizations that focus on a sociocultural approach to apply.

What is expected from the Host Institutions?

  • Organizing the Fellow's accommodation (rental costs will be reimbursed by the program up to max. Euro 750 for 6 weeks)
  • Mentoring the Fellow personally in English, throughout the 6-week Placement
  • Providing the Fellow with insight into your center’s work and current activities
  • Actively involving the Fellow in an artistic/cultural project your institution will conduct or prepare during the period of the Placement. The program is open for any kind of artistic reflection (performing arts, visual art, media, literature, etc.)
  • Providing the framework to enable the Fellow to launch a Small-Scale Project in your institution, as part of the Placement (project costs will be reimbursed up to max. Euro 1,500).
  • Supporting the Fellow in the development of his/her main project proposal for Phase II of the START program (focusing on fundraising, cost and financing plan, acquisition of participants, project management, public relations and communication strategy)
     

What kind of financial support do we offer Host Institutions?

The Host Institutions are eligible to receive up to max. Euro 5,750. The amount is subdivided as follows: 

  • Euro 3,500 fixed administration costs
  • up to Euro 1,500 max. reimbursement of expenses (material costs, fees) for implementation of the Fellow's Small-Scale Project
  • up to Euro 750 max. reimbursement of rental costs for the Fellow’s accommodation

For your information: The Fellows receive a monthly subsistence of Euro 800 from the START program.

  • July 14, until August 15, 2018: Digital matching process of Fellows and German Host Institution
  • August 24, 2018: Info sessions for the new Host Institutions in Berlin
  • Announcing of matching results during the Info sessions
