Project Title

Svoura Project

When and why is an object described as trash? What if we didn’t worry about where the trash ends up, but instead wondered how we can experiment with and through it and redefine it anew?

The Svoura Project is a socio-cultural initiative which implements artistic projects, inspired by trash found in local areas. By exploring the meaning of trash, we envision an utopia. This is not a world without trash but an alternate reality where nothings gets wasted, where the purpose of waste is constantly redefined in a sustainable circular process. The project engages the youth community in a process of artistic experimentation and co-creation changing the discourse regarding sustainability.

Svoura’s spin starts on the island of Aegina with 18 students from the 1st Junior High school of Aegina. From December until May, through a series of workshops, discussions and events, the students have co-created and curated a photography exhibition, artistic installations and Svoura’s version of an open-air cinema, made entirely out of... trash!

A growing network of collaborations and a documentary of our 6 month journey ensure that the Svoura Project, along with its emerging social and environmental impact, will keep spinning.

Project Title

Re_Puppet

Through participation and co-creation, the “Re_Puppet” initiative aimed to: bridge the gap between environmental sus- tainability and the cultural sector, switch the current perception of trash, and educate children about art. Using experimenta- tion, play and curiosity as motivation, the initiative seeked to promote interactive and horizontal learning in which all of us are artists.

5 children between 8 and 12 years old learned the secrets of puppetry, imagined stories, and constructed characters and settings using recycled materials and (non-organic) trash brought from their homes in this 2-day workshop. It started with the question “How do you imagine the world and what does the city of your dreams look like?”, the children then built-up their story using collective intelligence and their creativity. On the third day, the kids performed their story and the video of the process was presented in a public event. This project was a collaboration between Maria Kikidou, fellow of Plattform e.V., and Kassiani Kafetsi, fellow of CGE Erfurt e.V.
