AstronART

Every child is born with creative ability and the urge to discover, to invent. When growing up, during school life, this creative ability is not properly developed and is gradually getting lost.

At the same time, the development of technology in all fields of human expression plays a key role for the present. World- wide, educational initiatives that aim to encourage creativity in the field of science, such as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math), introduce educational platforms for the young generation. In Greece, these costly initiatives are not accessible to every child besides the fact that such undertakings are rare and often lack skilled educators (pedagogues).

The AstronART project aims to empower the the young generation to face future challenges and to become the change makers of their communities. It is an educational, cultural and capacity building program which is investigates the new and innovative approach by STEAM, its promises and methods. A thematic prototype pop-up lab of Art, Science and Technology designed for children and adolescents regardless of age or ability is implemented in schools and communities. The participants transform their ideas into inventions, innovative solutions to challenges, products, and works of art.

Project Title

The Sound of Science

“The Sound of Science” was a participatory, interactive Sound Mural workshop for students of Erlangen. The workshop introduced students to electric paint, a unique material for prototyping with electronics, and the integration of electrical properties into traditionally inert mediums such as painting.

With this workshop, the students looked outside the box and acquired a range of skills such as creative confidence, in- terdisciplinary thinking and teamwork. They could experiment, express and expose their thoughts and themselves to the public without the fear of failure and criticism.

Another objective was to approach science and learn about electrical circuits and conductive materials in a playful and ex- perimental way and become technology-friendly in a creative (not consuming) manner. Ultimately, the workshop aimed to generate a better understanding of contemporary art, espe- cially interactive and participatory art, through participation in the creation of the Sound Mural.
