Evanthia Dermitzaki

2019/20 Athens

Eva is a conservator of works of art (BA, Ionian University) and a cultural manager (MA, Hellenic Open University) based in Athens, Greece. Along with her studies she had the opportunity to collaborate with artists and artistic groups from different fields of art, as well as to work for cultural organizations and museums (Athens Biennale, documenta 14, EMST, NEON Organization etc.). Passionate about contemporary art and convinced of the sociocultural benefits of inclusion, she strongly believes that art creates empathy and empathy changes everything.

As a Fellow of the 2019 START Program, Eva aims to establish the formal recognition of potential artists with intellectual disabilities in the cultural context of Greece. Her experience working with Kulturhaus Osterfeld in Pforzheim equips her with the expertise to pursue her vision: an inclusive art community and the creation of appropriate conditions for artists with intellectual disabilities to be encouraged to express their voice and exercise their rights through art.

Project Title

Outsider Art

The initiative concerns the need to redefine the rights of the artists with intellectual disabilities in the cultural context of Greece. Among the people with intellectual
disabilities who enjoy painting there are potential artists and my project’s statement is to recognize their art on a professional level. The establishment of the artistic rights of people with intellectual disabilities can be achieved through formal recognition and acceptance. For a country, the integration of socially excluded groups is a sample of culture. Their artistic works, like the works of all other artists, portray the modern era and should be considered as an integral part of the country's cultural identity. This project designs and offers services, information, education and vocational training programs that promote autonomy.
