Dimitris Kakavoulas

Dimitris was born in Patras and later moved to Athens to study International and European Studies at Panteion University. His passion for theater, however, wouldn’t let him settle down! It was 2009 when he volunteered for Athens’s International Street Theater Festival while still in drama school. This resulted in several performances from 2013 to 2017 either as an actor or as an assistant director. The latter evolved as he worked for the ISTFest over the course of 7 years; in the end, Dimitris became a core member of the creative team. Whether in acting or cultural management, from his own theater team to European projects, he is always experimenting with innovative ideas and public non-theatrical space with an aim of making theater accessible to all. In his training in Germany, he intends to redefine theater as an educational tool so that every child can really choose his role in life.

Scool

Scool is based on the strong belief that learning can be interesting, fun and cool. In a time when the Greek educational system is under heavy criticism, Scool promotes an alternative method: educational live action role playing (eduLARP). In eduLARP subject knowledge is a fundamental key element. However, it moves from being the main focus to being the means to achieve a shared and meaningful goal. Scool uses this idea of a common goal to provide a focus and driving force that brings subject knowledge and social skills into play through a narrative frame. Interdisciplinary or through individual subjects, a simulation of events and activities is created, where everyone has a simulated function. The interaction between the academic and the social dimensions motivates and creates meaningful knowledge. Scool aims to support the sections of a normal classroom, not to cancel them, giving teachers a tool which they can use whenever necessary. When everyone works together and subject knowledge is used correctly, almost all challenges can be overcome and then we are closer to the goal. And the goal is not only to achieve and to reach the top; just as much, the aim is to develop academically, personally and socially.

Scool: The Tribunal

“Scool: The Tribunal” was a project realized at the Friedrich- Spee-Gymnasium in an attempt to discover how role playing can enrich modern school education. Twenty 10thgrade students were introduced to role playing for the first time, participated in a couple of simple games and, finally, participated in a role-playing scenario. Students not only had the chance to experiment with role-playing techniques, but the chosen scenario (“The Tribunal” by J. Tuomas Harviainen) gave them the opportunity to discover the mechanics of oppression and understand what it means to put others before yourself. In addition, the scenario was used as a motive to start a discussion both about historic events, such as the 3rd Reich, and current ones, and to debate how we can sensitize and train people to have more social courage.

The cultural and communication center Tuchfabrik e.V. (TUFA) has been the center of independent culture in Trier for more than 30 years. Tuchfabrik is an activist location and production venue for cultural associations and initiatives working in the fields of theater, dance, cabaret, visual art, politics, rock and jazz music (the association currently has 30 members) as well as a place for communication, public forum for cultural and political discourse as well as for corresponding initiatives. TUFA is the space for art and culture in Trier.
