Despoina Papadopoulou

2017/18 Katerini

Despoina grew up in a small town built by Pontian refugees in the first half of the 20th century, in a country (Greece) in which the family still has broad meaning and where neighbors are referred to as uncles and aunts.

The sense of community was very strong and the idea of public service did not need to be explained: it was simply the way that everyone felt; they had a responsibility for others. Sharing the products of one’s garden with those in need, or doing pro bono work as a doctor or lawyer was part of this rural mentality forged through the Greek values of philanthropy and the common good. Her commitment to the cultural sector is therefore nothing more than the heartfelt desire to continue along this line of spontaneous solidarity.

Project Title

Step2Share Volunteering Has Never Been Easier

“The Step2Share” mini project is a research study comprised of semi-structured interviews, the designing and conducting of two surveys as well as an in-depth studying of the latest data available about the latest trends in volunteering in Europe. An online platform which matches volunteers to organizations was launched on the basis of this data. The aim of the project was threefold: 1) to identify the most common and basic requirements and expectations of prospective volunteers vis-à-vis volunteer organizations and vice-versa; 2) to identify a set of basic skills that an entry-level job seeker should possess according to the inputs of 20 big multinational organizations; 3) to design a training program tailored to the results of the findings which would then meet requirements while providing volunteers with the necessary skills for their continued professional development. Thanks to the inputs of 120+ volunteers and volunteer organizations, “Step2Share” created a training program tailored to the modern exigencies of volunteering.
