Christos Papamichael is a cultural entrepreneur aiming to apply and promote the ideas of accessibility, inclusion and sustainability in culture. He is an actor and theatrologist. He has participated in a variety of projects, from different creative perspectives (acting, dancing, performing, directing, event/production management, and promotion). His work is mostly focused on performative actions, through which he is experimenting with different structures of artistic collaboration and audience engagement.

Christos is a co-founder of “EMEIS–Collective Cultural Group”, which develops and delivers workshops, exhibitions, festivals and theatre productions through collective creative processes. He is also part of the Impact Hub Athens hosting team, a local and global network of collaborators focused on making a positive impact in our world.

Since 2015 he has been researching matters of inclu- sion and accessibility in relation to theater, which has led him to initiate the “Liminal” project. In September 2016, he offered accessibility services for deaf people at eight performances of “Our Festival”.

Project Title

Liminal Access World

Liminal provides the opportunity to engage with Theatre Art, regardless of social, physical or linguistic differences. Our ambition is to transform the creative scene of Greece into a more democratic, inclusive and sustainable realm. We create theatre experiences for everyone through accessibility services in existing or new productions and the development of theatre workshops and educational programmes.

Liminal Access World is designed to mobilize society via theatre, to establish communication between disabled and artistic communities, to provide access to theatre as a form of expression and to introduce the creative industry to new audiences.

Tools - Activities - Outputs

Our website www.liminal.eu serves as a portal for “accessive” Theatre and Culture. The platform is bilingual and friendly to blind or visually impaired users.

Liminal Open Days - Drama School Simulation is a two days, inclusive, drama educational program hosting 30 participants with or without disabilities, 20 instructors and 12 volunteers.

“Interview” by Emeis, a black comedy about unemployment is performed with accessibility services for the blind and visually impaired, the deaf and the international community. Out of the experience and knowledge gain, we create a guide digital accessibility, inclusive drama and accessible performances.

Project Title

BerLiminal

“BerLiminal” aimed to exchange inspiration, understanding and ideas; build a strong relationship between Theater Ramba- Zamba and Liminal Access World (my main project for Greece); cultivate an access-oriented mentality; work with disabled artists; and improve accessibility at Theater RambaZamba.

The project was divided into the 3 interconnected parts of: research, meetings and experimentation, event and workshop. The research covered issues of accessibility and ways of inclusion. The meetings and experiments connected RambaZamba personnel with other people working in the field of theater; they also made it possible for technicians, blind and deaf people, directors and artists to contribute their views and ideas on the issues under research.

The awareness event “RambaZamba meets Liminal” gave participants a clear overview of accessibility and inclusion; after discussing these terms, the group created a collective mind-map envisioning the ideal accessible stage of the future. In addition, a 2 hour theater workshop was designed and implemented for RambaZamba Youth Club as part of my project.

Host Institution

Theater RambaZamba

Theater RambaZamba in Berlin was founded in 1991 by the actress Gisela Höhne. 25 years later, the art and theatre world, the public and the media recognize RambaZamba as “Germany’s most famous inclusive theatre” (Mainzer Allgemeine) and as a place where it’s possible to experience “disability as a strength” (Frankfurter Rundschau). The peculiarity of Theater RambaZamba is its actors: 35 people with different disabilities are working as professional actors. They rehearse five days a week and play about 80 shows per year in-house, as well as in guest performances in Germany and abroad.
